カリモク家具の「ＫＵＮＳＴ（クンスト）」は、イタリア・ミラノを拠点に活躍するニルス・スパイエ氏（デンマーク）と猪田恭子氏のデザインスタジオ「ＩＮＯＤＡ　ＳＶＥＪＥ（イノダ＋スバイエ）」がデザインを手掛けたリビングコレション。このほど受賞したグッドデザイン賞（Ｇ賞）で「カリモク家具の持つ高度な切削技術と職人の手業が存分に生かされている」と評価された。同社は今秋、新たに「クンスト」のダイニングを発表、最大の特徴である木部と張り地との一体感をそのままに、シリーズの世界を広げている。

　造形にこだわり抜いたシャープなデザイン。丸みのあるソファのフォルムが落ち着きを感じさせる―。「クンスト」がお披露目された２０１７年。ＩＦＦＴ／インテリア・ライフスタイル・リビングのカリモク家具ブースで猪田氏は「カリモク家具の持つトップレベルの技術を最大限生かすことができた。触って感じる心地よさを味わってほしい」と話した。
　「イノダ＋スバイエ」は２０００年に結成。 調和と感性を重視した独特のアプローチに基づき、デザインから製作まで行っている。イタリアのミラノに事務所を構えている。
　「ＫＵＮＳＴ」はデンマーク語で「アート」を意味する。カリモク家具は「部屋の雰囲気を変えるアートピースのような家具をデザインしてほしい」と「イノダ＋スバイエ」に依頼した。
　「イノダ＋スバイエ」の美しさへのこだわりは、自然界に存在する砂丘のような連続する曲線美に由来しているという。「クンスト」は、連続する曲面でつながりながら、エッジが美しい曲線を描いている。触ると手の平が吸い付くような滑らかな曲面は、パソコン上で１㍉単位で丁寧にデザインフォームを修正しながら生まれた。シンプルだが、ボリュームのある緻密に計算された有機的な木部の削り出しには、最新機器とエンジニアの技能が駆使されている。
　Ｇ賞では「背中とアームと後脚をつなぐラインが非常に印象的で、木部と張り地の切り返し部分がその美しいラインを殺さず、一体感を生み出している」と高く評価している。木部と張り布の部分が連続した一つの曲面として一体となっており「背中もあらゆる角度にフィットする。長時間座っていても疲れない感覚を得た」ことがその評価の第一のポイントとなった。さらに「３６０度どこから見ても正面というフォルムから、大きなホールのような贅沢な空間でも負けない存在感を持つ椅子である」としている。
　「クンスト」は、同社の最先端の機器と技術による工業製造工程と、鍛錬された職人技による、工業生産と手作業のハーモニーをバランスよく生産へ導いている。現代の日本の家具製品の歴史の流れにおいて、量産技術とクラフトマンシップを見事に融合した製品として位置付けることができるだろう。

KUNST Series Adds New Products for Dining Room

The KUNST series is a furniture for living room, which was created by “INODA SVEJE”, a design studio managed by Mr. Nils Sveje from Denmark and Ms. Inoda Kyoko from Japan , who are working mainly at Milan, Italy. The series won Good Design Award ,or G-Award, this year, and also got high reputation that the products utilize sophisticated skills for cutting and curving and craftsmen’s handwork maintained by Karimoku Furniture. This company revealed new products for dining room as KUNST series, and expanded its world, maintaining its biggest characteristic, the united design between the wooden part and the covered fabric.

A sharp design which pursued the best shape. A sofa with a round form, which gave restful impression. The series KUNST got such reputation when it appeared in 2017. At that time Ms. Inoda said, “We could bring out the highest leveled skill of Karimoku Furniture as much as possible. I would like users to feel the special comfortability when they touch it”, at the booth of Karimoku Furniture in IFFT, or Interior Lifestyle Living.

INODA SVEJE was founded in 2000. The design studio, whose office is located at Milan, Italy, has a unique approach which puts importance on harmony and feeling, and carries on from designing to making. KUNST means art in Danish. Karimoku Furniture asked the studio to design furniture like a piece of art which can change the mood of the room.

INODA SVEJE is particular about beauty, and its preference came from the beauty of continuous curved lines which exists in natural world like sand dunes. The KUNST series has a characteristic that each part connects the others with curved surfaces and that the edges stand for beautiful curved lines. The smooth curved surfaces, which can fit to a hand when touching, was designed on personal computers, while correcting the design form carefully in an every millimeter. Its wooden parts were curved with an accurate calculation and achieved an organic design, which was simple but voluminous. The curving was a result of the newest technological tools and the skill of engineers.

G-Award evaluated the series highly and commented, “The lines, which connect its back support, armrest, and rear legs, are very impressive. Its wooden parts and the cutback parts of the covered fabric do not damage the beautiful lines, and give the sense of unity”. Its wooden parts compose of a continuous curved surface with the parts of covered fabric. The back support fits all angles, and users can sit without the sense of fatigue even though they keep sitting for a long time. This point was the most estimated one at G-Award. In addition, “Wherever you watch the chair from every angle, you may feel that it is the front side of the chair, due to the design of the form. The chair has strong presence, and it is not lost even in a gorgeous space like a large hall”, the comment of G-Award said.

KUNST series is an achievement of harmony between industrial production and handmade technique, by the collaboration between the industrial producing process by the newest machines and technology, and the highly trained skill of craftsmen, owned by the Karimoku Furniture. The series can be marked as the excellent combination between mass-producing technology and craftsmanship in the history of modern Japanese furniture.
